4 Tips for Choosing the Right Family Photographer
Family photography is not something you get done every day, so choosing the right photographer for your family might feel a little daunting - there are a lot of us to choose from! So I thought I’d give you a few tips to help you choose the right family photographer for you.
ONE | Style
This is such an important one, what kind of family photos do you like? My goal is always to create images that make you feel something, family photos that capture your personalities and what life looked like for your family at this time in your lives. I would describe my family photography style as (mostly) documentary, fun and maybe a bit different. If you are looking for family photos that are a bit more traditional - posed, everyone smiling at the camera… then I’m probably not the photographer for you. And that’s totally fine - there are lots of photographers that are amazing at photographing families in that style.
TWO | Personality
If you are a bit camera shy or maybe a bit self conscious then choosing a family photographer like me might help you feel more at ease. During a family photography session, we will chat - you go about your day with your kids like you usually would. You can pretend I’m not even there. And it’s my job to find the moments. If we’re doing a short session, I might ask you to sit in a certain spot but then you can just focus on laughing, chatting, cuddling your kids. It really is a lot less daunting when you don’t need to look straight into a camera! On the other hand, if you are super confident and love posing for the camera, then maybe you’d be better suited to a studio photographer.
THREE | Price
Obviously cost is always a factor when choosing the right family photographer for you. When comparing family photographers it is worth checking what is included in the price. When you book a family photography session with me, there is no cap on the number of images you receive. Because I photograph your session as your family story - I don’t limit the number of images you receive. I hate to think that I have special family photos that you won’t ever get to see again. You just choose the length of time you’d like me there and the longer the session the more images you receive.
FOUR | Perfect vs Imperfect
One of my favourite photos from an Extended Family photography session I did was of all the Grandkids sitting with their grandparents with grass stained legs - they had spent the afternoon playing backyard cricket and then all had a big cuddle and laugh with the grandparents. And I love it. It tells a story, it evokes memories of the day, it is so authentic of what those kids were like. Now, if this idea starts triggering you, then obviously you might be after a more ‘polished’ family photographer. You might want a bit more retouching and for clothes to stay pristine. But if you are all for the fun of a little face covered in cake mix after baking a cake or messy hair after building a fort under a doona then I’m definitely the photographer for you.
