The top 3 activities to plan to do during your extended family photography session at home

My favourite extended family photography sessions are documentary style sessions. You organise for everyone to come to someone’s home and you all hang out, kids play… we will do a few group photos of everyone but for the most part I capture everyone hanging out. I know that it can feel a little awkward being in the presence of a camera though so sometimes it helps to have something planned to do… and sometimes one activity naturally leads to another which is perfect for capturing all the moments of your family. So if you want some ideas of what you could all do together at your extended family photo session then read on.

ONE - Backyard Sport

If you’re family likes a bit of backyard cricket or soccer or even a slip and slide (that’s sport right?) then that’s a great ice-breaker… Obviously don’t start doing these things if it’s not at all your kind of thing but I know for some families, a summer gathering is not complete without a bit of backyard cricket. And if some don’t like to join in, no worries, you can sit on the sidelines and have a chat.

TWO - BBQ

Everyone relax and have a BBQ; gathering around the kitchen preparing food, little ones helping or sneaking food out the bowl, that sounds like a pretty good family gathering to me! And while I generally don’t take photos of adults eating, it can be pretty entertaining getting some photos of the kids enjoying their food. Or of the kids playing (or getting up to mischief) while the adults are busy prepping food. It’s all about relaxing and letting me find the special moments between you and your family.

THREE - Family tradition

Does your family have any traditions? Do you all get together a make a Christmas pudding before Christmas? Or dye Easter eggs in the lead up to Easter. Or maybe it’s time to start a tradition! This is the perfect opportunity for your extended family photography session.

No matter what you have planned, or if you have no plans at all and are just going to see where the morning or afternoon takes you - that’s A ok with me. Just enjoy your time together, be yourselves and let me find the moments to capture.
